Accreditation

The bachelor's program in civil engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of , under the commission’s General Criteria and ذكذكتسئµ Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering ذكذكتسئµs.

Constituents

Graduating students, alumni, employers, and faculty.

ذكذكتسئµ Educational Objectives

The following statements describe what the Department’s undergraduate engineers are expected to attain a few years after graduation.

  1. Increasing leadership and responsibility beyond entry level that meet the emerging and evolving demands of civil engineering;
  2. Communication and project management skills for effective problem solving;
  3. Engagement in life-long learning through professional activities, training, pursuing licensure, and understanding of professional ethics, public safety, cost constraints, environmental impacts, sustainability, and policy implications.

Student Outcomes

The student outcomes used by the civil engineering program are those published in the ABET “Criteria for Accrediting Engineering ذكذكتسئµs” document. Those outcomes are as follows:

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as wells as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and social contexts;
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions;
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

ذكذكتسئµ Criteria

The Civil Engineering ذكذكتسئµ criterion as listed in the ABET "Criteria for Accrediting Engineering ذكذكتسئµs" is as follows:

Curriculum

The curriculum must include:

  1. Application of:
    1. mathematics through differential equations, probability and statistics, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and either computer science, data science, or an additional area of basic science
    2. engineering mechanics, materials science, and numerical methods relevant to civil engineering
    3. principles of sustainability, risk, resilience, diversity, equity, and inclusion to civil engineering problems
    4. the engineering design process in at least two civil engineering contexts
    5. an engineering code of ethics to ethical dilemmas
  1. Solution of complex engineering problems in at least four specialty areas appropriate to civil engineering
  2. Conduct of experiments in at least two civil engineering contexts and reporting of results
  3. Explanation of:
    1. concepts and principles in project management and engineering economics
    2. professional attitudes and responsibilities of a civil engineer, including licensure and safety

Faculty

The program must demonstrate that faculty teaching courses that are primarily design in content are qualified to teach the subject matter by virtue of professional licensure, or by education and design experience.

Mission

The mission of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is to provide students with high quality, accessible undergraduate and graduate civil engineering education; to engage and empower students with skills and knowledge to thrive in professional careers; and to serve society through economic and technological development of Southeast Texas and beyond.
