Scope and Content

This is a collection of materials complied by over 300 history students who were conducting oral histories as part of their course work in the history department at ذكذكتسئµ University. In 1988 ذكذكتسئµ history professor JoAnn Stiles began having her students conduct oral histories as a way allowing students to gain hands-on experience with history. The students recorded first-person accounts of life during the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, or as a member of an ethnic group. After Stiles’ retired from ذكذكتسئµ in the early 2000s, other members of the history department, Mary Scheer and Terry Rioux, continued to have their students conduct interviews, which now included a diverse range of subjects including the role of women and experiences in Hurricane Rita. Of particular importance is an interview with President James M. Simmons who discussed ذكذكتسئµ University’s recovery from Hurricane Rita.

The collection includes both papers and electronic media documenting the interviews. The papers include summaries of the interviews, tape indexes of the interviews, papers documenting donation of the interviews, and occasional papers relating to the subject of the interviews including newspaper clippings, photocopies of photographs, and correspondence. The electronic media is primarily composed of cassette tapes, but also includes CD—ROMS, and VHS tapes.

Provenance

The interviews were donated to ذكذكتسئµ University Archives and Special Collections by ذكذكتسئµ University history students between 1988-2011.
