Cloud Storage Security

cloud-storage

Cloud storage is a service where data is remotely maintained, managed and backed up. The service allows users to manage their files from any location with internet access from any type of smart device such as a computer, cell phone or tablet.

Personal vs. Business

Any Google, Apple or other cloud storage account YOU have set up is YOUR personal cloud and is not endorsed by ذكذكتسئµ University. This storage is not secured at a business level.

ذكذكتسئµ University provides two storage solutions. Business Cloud, aka Microsoft One Drive for Business, is available to faculty, staff and students. ذكذكتسئµ Cloud, aka “the NAS,” is available by request to faculty and staff and is appropriate for storing confidential data.

Avoid storing ذكذكتسئµ University information on your personal cloud. Never store confidential data on your personal or business cloud.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Cloud Storage

Advantages

  • Accessible—You can use multiple devices such as computers, tablets, iPads and cell phones.
  • Cheap—Very affordable.
  • Easy—Most cloud storage services allow you to "drag and drop" your files. No emailing files, just send a link through email.
  • Available—Useful as a backup solution for your personal files.

Disadvantages

  • Security—Often targeted by hackers.
  • Privacy—You are trusting the service provider with your important and private information.
  • Control—Once your information is in the cloud, you have no control over it.
  • Connectivity—You will occasionally encounter technical issues with your connection or network.

Tips to Consider

  • Choose a reliable service provider.
  • Use a strong password and two-step authentication, if available. Use a password generator and manager such as LastPass, KeePass or 1Password to help manage your passwords.
  • Understand your provider’s privacy statement. Do they encrypt your data? You may want to encrypt your data even if they do. Do they have access to your data?
  • Do not put anything on the cloud you do not want stolen or made public.
  • Understand how they protect and where they store your data.
  • You need a very good internet connection to access your data.
