(b. 1964) Rusty Scruby is a contemporary Dallas artist known for cutting and weaving paper and photographs into mathematically precise constructions. He often uses music and mathematical configurations of waves in his fabrications. Most recently, he has been creating works with a wooden cube network.

Scruby initially studied aerospace engineering in college before changing majors to music composition. Eventually, he decided to focus on art while incorporating elements of his other studies into his work. Scruby studied at Texas A&M University and The University of North Texas.

Scruby’s work may be found in the collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Houston and The Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont, as well as in the corporate collections of Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA and Capital One, Dallas, TX.

Oaks

(2 pieces)
Year: 2016
Medium: Mixed Media Construction
Location: Lobby of the Reaud Administration Building

These works are about the opposing relationships of pattern vs. chaos and focus and vs. abstraction.  While the oak motif is clearly visible when viewed straight on and from a distance, it appears abstract when viewed up close or from the side.

In a testament to Scruby’s ability to mathematically engineer his compositions, he did not paint the images on these sculptures after assembly, but on each tripod prior to assembling the whole.
