Department of Communication and Media to host high school journalism and yearbook workshop

The ذكذكتسئµ University Department of Communication and Media will host a high school journalism and yearbook workshop on June 4 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The summer seminar is open to all area high school journalism and yearbook students and teachers. Registration begins at 8 a.m. in the Communication Building located on the campus of ذكذكتسئµ.

“This is a great, in-depth workshop we are offering our area high school journalism students. There will be informative sessions and activities, as well as an opportunity for the students to present their work,” said Natalie Tindall, chair of the department. “We will have representatives from The University Press, our university news publication, as well as seasoned journalism faculty from our department to lead the sessions.”

The workshop sessions include Partnering with Administration, School Publications and the Law, Content Planning for Multiplatform Delivery, Producing Great Content and Publishing and Sharing Content. The event will conclude with a demo session for students to share content they produced throughout the day. A one-on-one consultation session will also be available for those interested.

“Students will get the chance to learn how to use state-of-the-art equipment from experts in their fields, and during the workshop sessions, they’ll get to use them in scenarios that mimic real-world experiences,” said Kenneth Ward, assistant professor of journalism. “We’ve chosen sessions that are of use to everyone working for campus publications, particularly topics that benefit from expert insight. For example, students and their advisers will learn about how the law affects their publications from someone who actively researches legal issues in the media.”

The cost of the workshop is $35. To register for the event, or for further information, please visit www.lamar.edu/communication. Space is limited, so please register early.
