Stephan Malick is an adviser and assistant director of Student Publications and advertising manager for the award-winning University Press student newspaper.
A LU alumnus with B.S. Communications and M.Ed. Education Digital Learning & Leading, he is an Advanced Certified Digital Educator of the ذكذكتسئµ University Department of Educational Leadership and the Association of College and University Educators.
He is an Instructor in the Department of Communication and Media and a professor of practice teaching Malick is also one of the faculty advisers for the ذكذكتسئµ University Student Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
His teaching and research interests include creating innovative learning environments for communication and media students and journalism educators. He advocates for hands-on, professional practice, and instructional methods for both student and professional newsrooms.
His teaching distinctions include the College of Fine Arts and Communication’s 2019 Innovation & Excellence Award for his development of a student e-portfolio initiative, the Interscholastic League Press Conference’s Edith Fox King Award for “significant contributions to Texas scholastic journalism,” the University Interscholastic League’s Distinguished Adviser Award and The Wayne A. Reaud Excellence in Education Award.
He is also a journalism judge for the University Interscholastic League student competitions and coached several State Finalists journalism students and teams for Beaumont ISD, Humble ISD and West Orange Cove CISD.
He is an award-winning member of several professional press associations including the Press Club of Southeast Texas, the Society of Professional Journalists, the former American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors (now News Leaders Association) associations earning multiple first-place awards for news and feature writing.
Malick’s experience as a media professional includes as a news reporter and photographer for Hearst and Donrey media groups. He has also worked as a creative and client principal and consultant in advertising, corporate communications and innovation initiatives for large and small agencies and for several Fortune 500 companies including J. Walter Thompson, Fox Sports Southwest, Chevron, HP, Snapper (Briggs & Stratton) and Major League Baseball.
Malick is a US Army and US Army Reserve veteran having served during Desert Storm and several other overseas deployments to other countries.
A SETX native, Malick enjoys many outdoor activities the area offers with his family and serves and volunteers for several local charities and civic non-profits. He enjoys writing poetry with several published works and multimedia spoken word projects.
Courses he teaches include Comm 1373 Media Writing, Comm 2311 News Gathering and News Reporting, Comm 3330 Feature Writing, Comm 4310 Communication Law, Comm 4395 Journalistic Experiences and Comm 4396 Sports Writing.
